Artefact 2 Evaluation

The initial aim of this artefact is to create a night time scene by exploring lighting and colour variations. I gathered my research and decided to experiment with lighting coming through the window, as many night time bedroom scenes are focused around the window.

The first thing I did was that I turned off all the lighting in my environment and used a photometric light outside the bedroom so that it would shine inside the room. I wanted that to be the only light source that my room would have. This is because many of the images that I have seen of night time scenes; this would be the only source. I had to ensure that I placed the light in the correct position so that the shadows would fall in the perfect position. I wanted the light to create a focal point onto the bed, where the viewer’s eyes would instantly be attracted to. The focal point on this image is the bed and the records on the bed.

I also wanted my image to tell a story. Give the viewer some sort of idea of the person that lives there. I had done this by placing records on the bed and a concert playing on the TV to show that the person occupying the room has some sort of musical background. I have used other props to give away his identity such as speakers under the TV and the picture on the wall which is of records and a guitar.

Once I created this image I thought it would be interesting using different colour lighting to set a winter night atmosphere. I created three versions with different coloured lighting and created surveys asking the viewer which image worked the best as a night time winter scene. The results showed that the original image was the strongest.

I realised that I don’t need to change the colour of the lighting as long as the scene has a low lighting level to create a winter night time atmosphere.

Progress of Artifact 2 - Dark Room in winter

My aim is to create a winter evening atmosphere in the bedroom which I created. I experimented with photo metric lighting. I changed the colour of the tint of the lighting to create more of a night time effect, but I wasn't too sure on how these changes effected the atmosphere. I then created a questionnaire and asked my focus group to fill this in. It was mainly people on the multimedia course. I contacted them and sent them a link to my questionnaire via Facebook  I then gathered the results and found that they preferred the original image that I produced, mainly because you can see the detail of all the objects clearer. Some people said that the colour tinted pictures created a different atmosphere which I didn't want to create. For example the green tinted light created a scary / horror atmosphere which was a completely different atmosphere to the one that I intended to create. I then decided to show the same set of images in my tutorial when I presented this artefact and again I received the same responses from my focus group. The surveys and the presentation that I did really helped me as my focus group backed up my survey results. In conclusion I will used the original image that I created.

Artifact 2 Dark Room - Planning

For my second artifact I'm looking to create a dark room. I will use the same environment that I created for my previous artifact and modify it. I have been researching online finding what elements actually go into a dark room, other than just making the environment just a low lighting scene. I have also done some practical research, studying and observing my own bedroom at day time (bright) and then at night (dark). Below are some of the main images I used to reference and use as inspiration for this artifact.

The main things that I picked up from these images and my real life observation is that no matter the time of day there is always light coming from the window even if the blinds or curtains are closed. This light source is usually moonlight, streetlights or light coming from other houses or cars. I never realised how much light comes through your blinds until I did this experiment myself. This will be a main focus on this artifact, the moonlight coming through the window and that light creating a focal point on an object and also casting shadows. I also want my artifacts to tell a story so that you get a feel of what type of person would be living in that particular environment.

Artefact 1 Changes and Evaluation

Here is the final version of my first artifact. I have softened the shadow by decreasing the lighting intensity and moving the light slightly away from the wall. I Have also inserted a chair into the scene to give the scene some character. I have also placed some objects on the table for the bedroom to look more lived in

Evaluation:

Artifact 1.. What I need to improve

This is my first artifact, I presented it in tutorial and wanted some feedback on I could change to improve the scene. Overall I received a lot of good feedback, mainly about the high detail of texturing e.g floor and rug. Here is what I presented:

The constructive feedback which I received was that I need to make the shadow from the top left light softer because the shadow by the window blind is quite hard. I now see this and will ether move the light further away from the wall or turn down the light intensity to soften the shadow. The second thing my peers said was that the space by the table looked too empty. I will fix that by inserting a chair or something like that to fill the room.

The lighting and the space were the only things wrong with this artifact. For me this was a good sign that I am  on track. I'm glad my peers showed me areas on which I can improve. I will post another render of the amended version once I have completed it.

AMENDMENTS:

I have now fixed some issues that I found with this artefact. I have placed a chair by the table and also a bin to fill the room. i have also changed the lighting panel on the wall This is because it didnt really work, I created questionnaire asking my audience what they think of this artefact and most of them said they really liked it apart from the lighting panel. I will upload my full questionnaire in depth in a new post. I covered the space by placing some abstract paintings above the bed to fill the space but more importantly to add more character to the room.

Artifact Lighting Setup

As lighting is one of the main aspects that I am exploring I am doing in depth research into how modern bedrooms are lit. What types of lights are used, and how spaced out the spotlights are on the ceiling. Below are some images which I have found that have given me a clear idea on how lights are placed in a bedroom

Looking at all of these images online i decided to incorporate key lighting method into this artefact. Not necessarily making the lighting focus on one image but using a main light and then other lights to soften them out

After studying these images and researching online, I started to create the lighting for my bedroom environment. First I modeled the actual light then decided where the lighting should be placed. I have made a screenshot of my 3Ds Max work file so that you can see where I have placed the lights.

Artifact 1

I have placed a camera in the bedroom that I am creating. I thought it would be a good idea to take a render every time I make a noticeable change to the scene so that I can show my progress. I am paying great attention to detail and have picked up many new techniques by using online tutorial and admiring other peoples 3D renders online. Since my last project I have learnt so many new things which I missed out before such as texturing the floor properly so that it tiles the right way. Adjusting the glossiness to add realism to an object and also using different types of lighting methods

Here are some progress shots:

Planning out my artifacts

In my research project document I talked about lighting and the effects of lighting and colour in an environment. I wasn't too sure how to use this in connection with my 5 artifacts. I knew I wanted to create a bedroom but wasn't too sure how to connect them both. I used my tutorials as an opportunity to gain advice from my tutor and peers, once talking to them I had decided a structure for my artifacts. But they could change anytime throughout the process of me creating. If I come up with a different idea I will post it here on my blog.

Overall aim of my artifacts will be about lighting / colour and how important it is in an environment and how it tells a story / sets the scene.

Artifact 1 -  Bedroom (exploring lighting techniques)

Artifact 2 - Bedroom at night (exploring lighting techniques, use of dark colours)

Artifact 3 - Depressing bedroom (Exploring lighting techniques, Dark colours use of relevant objects)

Artifact 4 - Close up / Z Depth - (Close up of an ashtray exploring different camera angle and effects)

Artifact 5 - This one is still undecided but i have a few ideas which I will research and ask in tutorial (renovated bedroom, different occupier in bedroom- exploring textures,)

Artifacts

Over the Christmas holidays I have been thinking about my artifacts and what they could be. Iv been looking at bedrooms mainly as I would like to go into interior visualisation once I have graduated, so I thought it was only right to use this opportunity to create a bedroom for my artifacts and experiment with different lighting techniques, colours, and textures.

I have been researching and looking for images of bedrooms online that I can reference, I'm looking to create a modern bedroom for my first artifact, using a specific time of day to match the lighting inside the room e.g summer morning - bright room. I'm also looking at images of objects and furniture to create for the room that I can reference to create a realistic room. Another advantage of me doing a bedroom is that I can add it to my online portfolio and add the objects that I will of created to my own database if I ever need them again in the future

Below are some of the images I have been looking at and inspiration for my first artifact.

Once I looked at the image above and many more which are similar I started to write down some ideas which came to mind. Obviously a bedroom will have a bed and other essential things, but I want to make sure the objects and furniture I create is just like the real world. I have decided to model a bed with a glossy headboard. I will put a rug on the floor giving the room some character (I haven't decided on the texture). Beside the bed on both sides I will place small drawer with lamps on them. They will be modern lights. The bedroom will also have blinds to block out the sun at night. The bedroom will  also have a laminated wood texture that you usually find in bedrooms.
